The
soft opening of Donnie Mac's Trailer Park Cuisine last Thursday was
anything but trailer park. As some of the previously vacant buildings
in
Boise
's Linen District find new occupants, the vision of what the
district's developers are hoping west downtown will become is
materializing. And the opening of Donnie Mac's—just a block from the
recently opened Visual Arts Collective, also a project of Linen
District—is the latest affirmation of the burgeoning neighborhood.
When
our mob invaded a table by the glass-paneled garage doors, we sampled
onion rings, fries, burgers and frozen custard. Though opening night
is no time for a food review, we have nothing but good comments to
pass on to those who would ask.
Served
7 to 11 a.m., the breakfast menu features the usual breakfast
suspects: eggs, toast, pancakes, French toast, eggs benedict, omelets,
biscuits and gravy, and oatmeal. The lunch and dinner menus offer
mesquite grilled burgers, meatloaf, homemade mac and cheese, chicken
sandwiches and salads. And dessert boasts a one-of-a-kind in the
Treasure
Valley
—frozen custard in chocolate and vanilla.
Though
the decor is certainly unique with a 1941 Chevy up on blocks for the
kids to play in and a kitchen built-in to a camper trailer replica,
the most impressive use of space is the separation of dining and
hanging out areas. The backroom, for lounging with friends, is tucked
back behind the kitchen and away from the family friendly dining area.
