Big City Coffee and Cafe has opened in a big way in Boise's Downtown Linen District, offering an extensive menu of fresh-baked goods, boxed lunches and catering services in addition to coffee selections from Boise's White Cloud, San Diego's Cafe Moto, and Gillies Coffee Co. of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Owner Sarah Fendley first opened Big City on State Street in 2001, sold the business, retained the name, and opened a new business Downtown on Dec. 15.

Fendley had been perfectly content at the original location, but when approached by developer David Hale about opening a store in the Linen District, she knew it was the right time and the right move.

"Selling a business that was thriving to start over in a new unestablished area is scary. I followed my initial gut instinct and took the plunge. I know I did the right thing," Fendley said.

"This spot — this space, it really fits me and it fits Big City. If you walk in, it feels like we have been here forever already."

All pastries and food items are made from scratch. The menu includes breakfast and lunch options from waffles, scrambles and quiche to sandwiches, soups and seasonal salads.

"We are a very different kind of place. You may come for the coffee but you will stay for the food," Fendley said.

"We are the perfect place for fresh food fast. If you feel rushed and can't sit down but want something good to eat, we can help."

Big City Coffee and Cafe is located at 1416 Grove St. Winter hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. 343-3145
