LINEN BUILDING ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY
The original American Laundry building, built in 1910, was the first and only laundry facility in the United States to use
natural hot water, commonly known as geothermal heat and referred to in today’s climate as renewable energy. After
successfully completing Boise’s first Brownfield’s redevelopment program by cleaning up the contaminants in the ground
resulting from 90 years of operating as a laundry facility, and 2 solid years of renovations, the building has taken on
a new life as a Special Events Center.
October 5, 2008 marked the one year anniversary of the new business and to date, activity has been steady. “I set the
goal of hosting 100 events in the building our first year in business” explained business and building owner David Hale.
“We ended up doing 137 events which far surpassed my expectations. It was a great first year.”
The Linen Building Event Center hosts events ranging from fashion shows to film premieres, private parties to corporate
speaking engagements. “The versatility of the space allows for a variety of uses to take place. I’ve been most pleased how
well we can accommodate so may different types of events.” said Hale. “I’m looking forward to what lies ahead. I’d like
to see over 200 events take place our second year in business.”
Hale says that although the building is completed and operations are smooth, he still plans on adding more amenities to
bring in more business. “We have plans to install acoustical treatments along with a sound and lighting system so we can
have more music related events. The space is screaming for these amenities.”

BEST OF BOISE
Three years ago, not much was happening around 14th and Grove. Several businesses like Alloway Lighting and the Boise Center
Guest Lodge anchored the area now known as the Linen District. In just a few short years, the Linen District has become an area
where people can shop for new clothing and furniture, get their breakfast, lunch and dinner needs taken care of, as well as lounge
and lodge at the Modern Hotel.
It was to no one’s surprise when the community responded to Boise Weekly’s Best of Boise by dishing out awards to many
Linen District businesses.
